Hannah Mendelsohn was born in Kitchen, Ontario, Canada, on September 21, 1874. Her parents were both of German descent and had emigrated to Canada in the early 1860s. Hannah was the fourth of six children. The family was poor but hardworking, and Hannah's parents instilled in their children the importance of education. Hannah attended the local public school until she was 14, when she began working as a domestic servant to help support her family. Despite her lack of formal education, Hannah was an avid reader with a natural cooking talent. She often experimented with recipes, much to the delight of her family and friends.
